Greeting airport travelers are glulam queen-post trusses that support a 19-foot overhang covering the entry sidewalk. The (14) trusses, measuring 8-3/4 inches by 33 inches and up to 55 feet long provide the long spans that designers at Gensler desired so that fewer columns would obstruct the panoramic view of the spectacular Grand Teton mountain range.
The trusses supplied by National Building Systems were fabricated by Western Woodwright from glulam beams manufactered by APA member QB Corporation. Trusses were fastened with rods and clevises to the facade's Douglas-fir columns and primary glulam beams.
Indoors, premium-appearance glulams were used to fabricate beams and purlins that coordinate with solid-sawn 24-inch Douglas-fir columns, an exposed tongue-and-groove ash wood ceiling and steel brackets that were chosen for their aesthetics.
Completed in 2015, the airport facility has garnered many accolades including: Fodor's list of the world's most stylish airports, a 2015 Wood Design Award and a 2014 AIA Institute Honor Award for Architecture.
